Job Description:
Long term contracts available for technical authors, ideally with marine publications experience.
Would suit ex Royal Navy engineers, as thorough ship systems knowledge is important.

Responsible to the Technical Publications Manager you will join a team of experienced Technical Authors in the production of technical documentation using the appropriate software and to the required specification or customer requirements. The ability to work using your own initiative to achieve the desired deliverables within the agreed budget and timescale is essential. You will work in close liaison with other members of the team, interpreting drawings and technical data to produce material that is safe, viable and compliant.

You will understand and be experienced in working to specifications such as S1000D and will be competent and confident in using software packages such as Adobe Framemaker or MS Word. You will be able to draw on your experience to produce quality work from limited sources in a timely manner, utilising resources such as the internet and supplier information.
Ideally you will have a mechanical / electrical engineering background preferably on Marine or Naval projects and some experience of SGML.

MAIN TASKS

1. The production of documentation, to the required specification or customer requirement, within the agreed budget and timescale, using the word processing package specified for a particular contract.

2. An understanding of technical illustrating techniques and their applications, applicable to technical publications.

3. Produce instructions to printer for printing requirements.

4. Monitoring of Sub-Contractors progress and standards, attending meetings with the Customer / Sub-Contractors as required.

5. Initiating the procurement and assimilating information from all sources, evaluating the applicability of the information against the specification and price.

6. To assist in the compilation of Departmental Procedures / Project Working Instructions as directed by the Department Manager.

7. To ensure that all safety issues, applicable to the task(s) under his control covered by Technical Publications MMS and Spares support deliverables and services are properly evaluated and addressed.

8. Carry out any task within his competence as may be directed by his management.

9. To implement the requirements of ISO 9001/2000 as defined in the Integrated Business Systems Manual VTD/IBSM/001.

10. Maintain requirements of the Health and Safety at Work Act
